SUMMARY:Social-Emotional Learning Storytime: Puppets\, Props\, & Play
DESCRIPTION:As schools prioritize incorporating social-emotional learning (SEL) into curriculum\, libraries can also take the leap and infuse SEL practices into storytimes as well as other youth and family programming. This fun and interactive session will explore some ideas for creating social-emotional connections through puppets\, props\, and play! A brief introduction about SEL competencies and learning fundamentals will offer basic frameworks that anyone can adapt to their own authentic personality and style. Feel free to bring a puppet or favorite storytime prop along to “show-and-tell” or just come with an open mind! Whether you’re new to storytime or a seasoned pro\, this will be a fun opportunity to share and learn with others who want to cultivate and create authentic interactions and learning experiences with kids and families. You will have a chance to participate in some engaging activities\, contribute ideas\, or simply sit back and watch.\n\n\n\nMandy O’Brien has worked as a Youth Services Librarian at the Skokie Public Library (right outside of Chicago) since 1999 and was the recipient of the Illinois Library Association’s 2022 Youth Services Achievement Award. Before SPL\, Mandy worked as a magazine editor and still freelances for publishers and educational organizations. She enjoys infusing social-emotional learning\, play\, and early literacy techniques into library programs and believes puppets are great partners in building relationships with kids (and their grownups). In addition to reading and writing\, Mandy also loves board games\, trivia\, her husband\, friends\, extended family\, and guinea pigs!

SUMMARY:Space to Grow: Assessing Future Library Building Needs Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Is your library beginning to feel a little cramped? Do you already know your building isn’t adequate for your community’s needs\, but need help articulating why? How do you translate changing demands for library services and resources into a plan for your library building’s future? Public Library Space Needs: A Planning Outline is designed to help library planners translate a library’s service goals into the amount of space needed to achieve them. Using the Outline can help you assess the adequacy of your existing library and evaluate whether to embark on a building project. \nThis webinar will offer an introduction to the recently-released 4th edition of Public Library Space Needs: A Planning Outline. You’ll learn more about the relevance and limitations of the Outline as a planning tool for Wisconsin public libraries\, and experienced library planners will walk you through examples of how to use the Outline to evaluate your library space needs. There will be ample time for Q&A. \nPresenters: Deb Haeffner\, Building and Design Consultant\, South Central Library System; Teresa Schmidt\, Public Library Administration Consultant\, Wisconsin DPI Bureau of Libraries; John Thompson\, System Director and Building Consultant\, IFLS Library System \nRegister
